- JACK KEROUAC: Before he became the voice of the Beat Generation, Jack Kerouac (here in 1959) was a promising football runningback who fielded offers of athletic scholarships from Notre Dame, Columbia, and Boston College. But a cracked tibia and constant bickering with his coach at Columbia led to the end of his college career and, eventually, he became the literary icon he’s known as today.
